Mark Hughes says they can win.

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes says his team want to win the League Cup, after they sealed their place in the last 16 of the competition by beating Fulham at Eastlands last night.

Hughes has asserted that City will continue to name strong sides in the competition, as they look to bring silverware to the club as soon as possible.

“We will keep putting out strong sides. We had a decent crowd in and it is important we show respect to them and to the competition,” he said, according to the Press Association.

“There are a number of Premiership sides in the next round and this cup has taken on great significance in recent times.

“Maybe it is one of those that clubs feel is winnable as the title is out of reach to all but a select few.

“You have to make the most of the competitions you are in and maybe we have a real opportunity to win it.”

Meanwhile, Hughes confirmed that in-form attacker Craig Bellamy only featured in the Wednesday-night win over Fulham because City’s next game wasn’t until Monday night – when West Ham United visit Eastlands.

“My only concern is that given Craig’s injury history I am reluctant to play him in three games in a week,” he explained.

“It is the only the fact we are playing on Monday that I was able to play him. We hope everyone recovers by then and the two extra days makes all the difference.”
